Written 41 Years of O Level Pure Chemistry and A Level H2 Chemistry Papers

By Winners Education

I was doing spring cleaning in my centre and found the 10 Year Series books I have written over the past 10+ years.

These was the first books for O Level Pure Chemistry Topical and Yearly edition by Fairfield Book Publishers.

I started writing the suggested solutions, tips, common mistakes starting with the 2002 papers!

How time flies.

Just calculated, I have written 23 years worth of O Level Pure Chemistry papers!

For the A Level H2 Chemistry titles, I started writing the papers from 2007 under SAP Publisher. The photo below was taken at our old premises at Waterloo Centre.

So including 2024 papers, I have written 18 years worth of A Level H2 Chemistry papers!

A total of 41 years of O & A Level Chemistry papers! Sounds like a lifetime.

I hope my work has benefitted the students immensely over these years.

Titles just hot from the oven

Subject Based Banding SSB

By Winners Education

From 2024

With Full SBB in secondary schools, students will have greater flexibility to study more subjects at different levels that suit their interests, aptitude and learning needs. There will no longer be separate Express, N(A), and N(T) streams.

MOE will post students to secondary school through three Posting Groups – Posting Groups 1, 2, and 3. The PSLE score ranges for the three Posting Groups will be mapped from the previous N(T), N(A) and Express streams respectively.

Throughout their secondary school education, students can take subjects at three subject levels, known as G1, G2, G3 (G stands for General), mapped from the previous N(T), N(A) and Express standards respectively.

Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) examinations

From 2027, graduating students will sit for the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) examinations, at their respective subject levels (i.e. G1, G2, G3). There will be no change to the examination format, and the SEC examinations will continue to be jointly examined and awarded by the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board, MOE, and the Cambridge International Education.

Post Secondary Schools Admission

The existing JC admission criteria (i.e. L1R5 gross aggregate score of 20 or better, excluding bonus points) will be retained and computed with G3 subjects, to ensure that students have the sufficient academic foundation to access the A-Level curriculum

What It Means for Your Child

Based on the pathways above, if your child wants to enjoy more options for post secondary education, they must be learning mainly G3 subjects since the admission to JC is for students who learn at least 6 G3 subjects and 1 G2 subject.

Does your child really need Chemistry Practical Lab Classes?

By Winners Education

Winners Education does not have practical classes unlike many other tuition centres which attract parents/students with their Chemistry labs.

Because based on Mr Chua’s years of helping students, the main problem with practical is not the hands-on since most schools provide sufficient practice in their Chemistry labs.

Our students continue to score their As in O Levels by focusing on understanding their basic concepts and associated keywords so that they can answer their questions with the correct keywords. This has also indirectly helped them to boost their results in practical.

Our students have told us most are doing well for the hands-on section of their Chemistry Practicals.

Most are able to follow the step-by-step procedures given in the practical exam and thus get the necessary marks.

Instead, students always complain that they are struggling with:

A) the handling of the data/results from their hands-on practical

B) the practical theory questions which are linked back to their Chemistry Concepts (theories)

C) which topics are tested

D) Planning a Chemistry Experiment to Investigate.

As such, they struggled to pass or score in their Chemistry Practicals.

With a strong foundation of:

  • skill sets to handle all kinds of data/results collected in a practical exam
  • sound basic essential Chemistry concepts
  • knowing which topics in the syllabus will only be tested in a Chemistry Practical Exam (NOT all topics will be tested)
  • Key Points to include in Planning a Chemistry Experiment question

If your child needs a strong foundation of these, join us for our Pure Chemistry Practical Theory Workshop held in Sep/Oct.

“With reference to 2020 O Level Pure Chemistry Exam Papers. There’s a lot of organic chemistry questions (and marks allocated) which was struck off (and NOT replaced by questions from the key topics). As such, students must now ensure that they know their other topics very well, especially the smaller and less important topic. That few questions from such “smaller” topics now suddenly has very high weighting’s when it comes to marks.“
